Celebrating conservation

Weekend this coming Friday, Saturday and Sunday by joining together in prayer and vowing to preserve the Island's natural environment.

Club president Joyce Zuill told The Royal Gazette that the inaugural event was an extension of the Conservation Sunday that the group started 25 years ago in a bid to advance its aims -- furthering horticulture and taking care of the land.

The one-day event has been extended to three days in a bid to "draw in all the people of Bermuda...so that those who celebrate their day of prayer on Friday, Saturday or Sunday will be part of this'', she said.

"We wanted everyone to celebrate the beauty and uniqueness of our Island and to come together during the weekend, whatever one's religion or denomination, to pray together and to vow again to preserve our Island home, our endemic plants, our reefs, our open spaces -- our Bermuda,'' said Mrs. Zuill.

"For those who do not attend a place of worship, we would like to think that they will reflect and perhaps take time to plant a tree. We hope that this will be the beginning of an annual weekend when we can all confirm our intention to preserve our Island home.'' Almost all places of worship have been contacted and many supportive replies have been received, she continued.

Mrs. Zuill thanked all the clergy who said they would participate and the conservation organisations and flower clubs which are backing the weekend.

She also acknowledged the group's patron, former Environment Minister Arthur Hodgson, and noted that the Club looked forward to a good relationship with the new Environment Minister Terry Lister.
