Chi-Lites coming to Southampton
major fund-raiser to assist the aged on Saturday night. Billed as "A Heritage Day Weekend Extravaganza'', it will be presented by High End Entertainment and Web Entertainment.
Topping the bill will be legendary Chicago singing and recording artists, the Chi-Lites, who will be backed by their own seven-piece band.
Opening for them will be the US duo Legz Cartyair and Davonni. Cartyair has a versatile rap style, while Davonni specialises in smooth and sultry rhythm and blues.
Also makings a special guest appearance will be NFL player, number 79 Larry Webster, whose team, the Baltimore Ravens, were last year's Super Bowl champions. Mr. Webster is also a partner in Web Entertainment.
Local entertainers sharing the spotlight include the calypso review group, La-Gi-Gi, with Lloyd Simmons, and the ever-popular comedian Bootsie. Wendell Dill will emcee.
The Chi-Lites first burst onto the entertainment scene in 1960 and nine years later made the national charts with their hit, `Give It Away', which was soon followed by `24 Years of Sadness'. In 1970, they released `I Like Your Lovin'', followed a year later by their huge international hit, `Have You Seen Her?', whose opening narration became a standard part of the classic `Chi-Town' sound.
This chart-topper was followed by `Oh Girl', deemed the biggest hit of the group's career, whose distinctive neo-doo-wop style not only established the Chi-Lites' hallmark sound but also became their signature song.
Other hits included `We Need Order', `Stunned Out of My Mind', and `Toby', and altogether the singers amassed five gold albums, five gold singles and 18 top twenty R&B singles.
Part proceeds from Saturday's extravaganza will go to the Office on Aging, whose mission is to ensure that Government services are readily available and accessible to seniors.
The Director of the Office on Aging, gerontologist Dr. Melvin Dickinson, is a close friend of Bruce Simmons, owner of High End Entertainment. Knowing of the problems facing Bermuda's seniors, and the state of some of the rest homes, Mr. Simmons decided to organise a serious, top quality fund-raiser to help.
"This is the first of many to come,'' he promises.
