That is one of the main aims of the Bermuda TB, Cancer and Health Association's Christmas seal appeal.

Organisers are hoping to raise $50,000 this year to provide money for a mammography screening programme to rival those in the US.

A training programme is already underway according to Charity Seal Chairman Mr. Ed Smith and he added that Canadian radiologists have already helped in the training.

He said: "This will ensure that people are getting the best of care here without having to go overseas.

"We want people to get a mammograph here and have it read with the same amount of insurance that the signs are good as anywhere in the United States.'' He stressed not all the money will go to mammography, some will assist the association's other work, including helping diabetics.

The Christmas seal appeal was officially started by the Governor Lord Waddington who made his first visit to the association's headquarters yesterday.

The seals will go on sale at the Post Office in Hamilton on Monday.
