"I always describe the Bermuda College as a comprehensive institution of further and higher education.'' says President, Dr. George Cook.

When looking at the role of the College in the community, Dr. Cook pointed out the many challenges that make running the island's only college exciting.

"Whereas in larger populated countries and areas there are different institutions with different responsibilities, in Bermuda just because of our size, we have to do everything.'' "We have to cover everything from adult basic education to university level.

In some ways we are the post secondary institution for the whole country.'' he said.

"In our mission statement we describe ourselves as the National Centre for further and higher learning.'' Dr. Cook explained that this shapes the way and manner in which the College will expand.

"For the future it means we have to continue responding to these varied needs but in addition we have to move everything to a higher level.'' he said.

Of great importance to Dr. Cook is that the College provide courses that reflect local need.

"Given that International business is important to the Island's economy, we have to provide the professional instruction that will support it.'' "Given the size of the community it makes no economical sense to have another institution.'' Dr. Cook pointed out.

"We have a very unconventional role and I look forward with confidence as the Bermuda College becomes the University College of Bermuda, with the power to award degrees.'' Holding that a liaison between the community and the private sector is crucial to the Bermuda College's future success, Dr. Cook noted "We are seeking alliances to do what is practicable in areas of International Financial Services and Insurance and Resort Hospitality.'' "We need to find particular niches and develop them.'' he added.

"The Bermuda College is the single most important social institution on the island.'' according to Dr. Cook, "It is the vehicle by which residents are able to take advantage of further education and higher learning programmes - a critical function in the Bermuda community.''
