Comfort Zone was welcome sight at end

Anatomy and Miserable Muscles Club'' to enter the Comfort Zone marquee and sink onto a soft mattress or padded table at the end of 15 or 26 miles, there to be fanned by West End breezes whilst having the immediate effects of their post-dawn "madness'' pushed, pulled, or massaged away.

It also helped, of course, that the people performing this invaluable service were as kind on the eye as they were on the bod, but that is not, of course, why so many physiotherapists, massage therapists, and Body Shop staff generously donated their time to provide relief to suffering walkers.

As Bermuda Physiotherapists Association chairman, Mrs. Mary McCabe, explained, the object of her members' presence before and after the End-to-End walk was three-fold: 1. To ensure that participants approached and prepared properly for their 15- and 26-mile hikes by stretching their muscles beforehand to minimise post-walk injury; 2. To assess and provide treatment of injuries incurred along the way, including deep tissue massage.

3. To instruct walkers who reached Dockyard about proper cool-down stretches, and give them advice on what to do later that evening and the next day to prevent muscle soreness.

Apart from this important service, and the Association's desire to do something for charity, it was also felt that participation at such a high profile event was an excellent way to draw added attention to National Physiotherapy Month, also in May, when efforts are made to increase public awareness of what the profession is, and what physiotherapists do. Sharing the Comfort Zone marquee (which was sponsored and coordinated by the Bermuda Telephone Company Ltd.) with the physiotherapists were members of the Massage Therapists Association, who focused on the muscles, and helping the body to recover as quickly as possible from the effects of the long walk.

Body Shop employees applied complimentary Refreshing Foot Spray, Peppermint Foot Lotion and Pumice Foot Scrub to hot, tired feet.
