Commercial bank to hand out awards for best designed buildings

For the first time ever, a special award for the best recently designed local buildings are to be offered by the Bermuda Commercial Bank.

The annual award, called the Bermuda Building Design Awards, are the brainchild of former bank Managing Director Mr. Richard Francis.

The idea was in response to criticism about the Bermuda landscape, and aims to highlight and encourage the continuation of traditional Bermudian architecture. This year's focus is on exterior design, and future plans include focusing on interior planning and layouts.

Designers, residents, draftsmen and developers are encouraged to apply.

Building and home owners may submit entries, and give design credit to their architects.

Projects entered for consideration must have been completed between July, 1, 1993 and April 30, 1994. Designs may be of private homes, townhouse or condominium developments, or public buildings. Entries must include photographs and plans.

The winning entry will be chosen by an independent panel of judges, and the winner will receive a painting of that property by a well-known local artist.

The winning entry will also be featured in the Homes and Gardens supplement of the August issue of Bermudian magazine.

The deadline for entries is May 27, and all inquiries must be directed to Ms Celia Luthi at the Bermuda Commercial Bank.

"We have been encouraged by the calibre of entries received,'' commented bank Acting Managing Director Ms Audette Exel. "The Bermuda Commercial Bank wishes to salute the efforts of all those who have planned their building projects with the interest of Bermuda's heritage.''
