Miss Shawnette Parris' lawyer Mr. Phil Perinchief said the 18-year-old had sought legal action because she was fed up with organisers.

He added Miss Parris had not been asked to perform one duty related to the title she won last September 20 when Miss Dianna Mitchell was controversially crowned Miss Bermuda Islands amid unproven claims of prejudice and score tampering.

The list of prizes Miss Parris was supposed to win included a Caribbean cruise, a clothing voucher and a weekend at the reefs, the lawyer said.

"She has tried throughout the year to contact Mr. Terry Smith to get her prizes, but has been unsuccessful,'' he said.

"She has been extremely patient, having to wait right up until the eve of the 1993 pageant to get her prizes. Now she is irate.'' Mr. Perinchief said Mr. Smith's lawyer Sen. Jerome Dill had been contacted and was "surprised'' to learn Miss Parris had not received any of her prizes.

"The point is, what will happen to the Miss Tourism who is chosen this time around,'' Mr. Perinchief asked.

Mr. Smith said last night Miss Parris was not being denied her prizes. She had not had time to take the cruise she was offered, so he and his partner were working on getting her a credit, he said.

Her hotel stay had expired amidst the controversy of last year's show and he was involved in talks with the hotel's manager to see about renewing it. He claimed she did receive her clothing voucher.

Mr. Perinchief last year represented a band of 1992 pageant contestants who were upset over a pre-judging component of the contest that they were not aware of. They agreed to drop their case if organisers changed the rules and informed the contestants of any prejudging.

Contestants this year were told they would be pre-judged in the interview competition.

Miss Parris is currently abroad looking at prospective colleges, Mr.

Perinchief said. She contacted him on Thursday night for legal advice.
