*** November 21, 1995 was celebrated as National Community Education Day. It promotes family involvement and lifelong learning.
The theme for this year was "School's and families: Partnership Through Community Education''.
The focus was on the need for families to be involved in their children's learning and for families and schools to work together to support that learning.
The Community Education and Development Programme is also interested in what courses you would like to see offered, and invite you to share your `wish list' with them by 236-0829 or by mailing your request to Community Education and Development Programme PO Box WK 344, Warwick WK BX.
*** The Bank of Butterfield is once again sponsor of the Bank of Butterfield Mile as part of International Race Weekend.
This is the seventh year the Bank has sponsored the race, which takes place on January 12, 1996.
It will consist of a series of races involving primary and secondary school children, adults, celebrities and a prestigious field of invited world-class milers.
Last year an estimated 6,000 people crowded Front Street to view the races.
All school children and adults are encouraged to enter the Bank of Butterfield Mile. Trials for the Mile will take place on December 9 and 10 at the National Stadium.
And all runners must run in the trials in order to compete. Children can pick up trial registration forms at their schools, while other runners can get their entry forms at local sport stores or at any branch of the Bank of Butterfield.
All entries must be received by December 1.
In conjunction with the Mile, the bank will once again hold an annual colouring contest for primary students. Contest entry forms have been distributed to all schools and all entries must be completed before December 11. Prizes will be presented to the winners of each colouring category.
*** Due to a sudden increase in mosquitoes in Bermuda, the Health Pest Control Department this week advised residents to get rid of any standing water which will attract mosquitoes.
Supervisor Mr. George Simons said the Island's domestic mosquito problem stemmed from domestic cause.
"Many people believe that mosquitoes do not breed after the summer, but Bermuda's changing climate is conducive for mosquitoes to breed all year.'' Mr. Simons added that residents could help control the breeding of mosquitoes by simply removing items around their property that hold standing water, such as barrels, buckets, paint cans, neglected fish ponds and pools, trays under potted plants, and large plastic outdoor children's toys.
