Devonshire Rec gets community together
Recreation Club. In their first Good Friday Community Event, organiser and club secretary, Lloyd Smith explained that the club wanted to reach out and do more than just play football.
"We came up with this idea in February and just took it from there,'' said Mr. Smith as he recalled the difficulties he had in trying to promote it. "I kept getting put from one person to the next when I called the paper, and ZBM didn't play an entire week of advertising I had paid for.'' Appearing a bit disheartened by the lack of enthusiasm of MP's about the event, Mr. Smith said that Premier Jennifer Smith was invited and while he expected her sometime in the late afternoon, her secretary had advised him that she would first go to the UBP event at Horseshoe Bay.
Member of Parliament, Dale Butler was on hand at the club to judge the fishcake competition and present the winner with his children's book on the topic.
Christina Cann, a member of the `Rude Girls' soccer team, said the win was a complete surprise to her.
"I had no intention of entering my fishcakes in any competition. I had to make two dozen for the team. When I got here next thing I knew I was in the contest and then I won.'' Ms Cann ran away with the title as she won in each of the three categories: colour, taste and best overall. A $100 grocery voucher ensures she'll be making more of her award winning fishcakes.
