Dr. Finn on Applied Science and Technology
implemented just last year in the Bermuda College's Faculty of Applied Science and Technology.
Dr. Charles Finn, Dean of the department explained that the Certificate programmes are based on competency as opposed to knowledge and features a shift in focus from faculty member "the sage on stage.'' to the student "the guide on the side.'' Dean Finn described how the programme was set up. "In association with the National Training Board appointed Occupation Advisory Committees, Bermuda College faculty underwent an intensive process of curricula revision based on the concept of `What does an employee need to be able to do on the job' as opposed to the usual academic question of `What does a student need to know.'' he said.
"The employment tasks were identified and grouped to form a skill set.'' Dr.
Finn explained, "Associated skills were grouped into learning modules and students progress through the modules while faculty conduct a series of skill tests by which the students demonstrate their abilities.'' The programme sees "learning managers prepare learning guides in which resource material such as books videos, computer programmes, CD-ROM's, etc.
are identified and made available for the students.'' According to Dr. Finn "The Faculty of Applied Science and Technology, teaches students for careers in practical trades and technologies.'' International certifications are offered in three main areas; construction, automotive and engineering. Dr. Finn pointed out the importance of such certification "so that trained Bermudians can work away as well as locally after graduation.'' Associate degree programmes in Electronics and Electronics Technology, Dr.
Finn noted "prepare students for immediate careers locally as well as for transfer to Bachelors degree programmes at Northeastern University in Boston Applied Science and Technology: Dr. C.W. P. Finn of the Bermuda College.
