Dr. Smith is guest speaker
The theme as set by the International Council of Nurses is "Partnership for Community Health''.
This Sunday, the Association and the Department of Health will co-host a luncheon at Sonesta Beach Resort on this theme with a US guest speaker, Dr.
Gloria Smith.
Dr. Smith is vice president for programmes in the health field for the Kellogg Foundation. Dr. Smith is responsible for programme development and administration as well as programme/project evaluation and dissemination.
Prior to joining the Kellogg Foundation, Dr. Smith was dean of the College of Nursing at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan. Previously, she served as director of the Michigan Department of Public Health, Lansing.
Dr. Smith earn her doctorate in anthropology from the Union for Experimenting Colleges and Universities, Cincinnati, Ohio. The W.K. Kellogg Foundation was established in 1930 to help people help themselves through the practical application of knowledge and resources to improve their quality of life and that of future generations.
Its programming activities centre around the common visions of a world in which each person has a sense of worth; accepts responsibility for self, family, community and societal well-being: and has the capacity to be productive, and to help create nurturing families, responsive institutions, and healthy communities.
The foundation targets its grants toward specific focal points or areas. These include health, food systems and rural development, youth and education, philanthropy and volunteerism. Grants are concentrated in the US, Latin America, Caribbean and southern Africa.
Nurses Week is aimed at emphasising the importance of nurses in health care.
They are the largest proportion of health care providers in the community.
Nurses are vital to patient care, prevention and education.
