Effort continues to aid quake victims
for victims of an earthquake in the Azores.
Already $1,500 has been raised for their countrymen on the mid-Atlantic island, ten of whom died earlier this month when the quake hit. More than 1,000 people were made homeless.
This Saturday a dinner and bingo evening has been organised by the Portuguese Cultural Association at St. Theresa's church hall on Cedar Avenue, with all welcome. And the Vasco de Gama club is holding a fund-raising cruise in the near future.
PCA spokesman John Amaral said the events are due to take place soon, before many of the Portuguese community fly out to the Azores on a charter flight from Bermuda. "The fund-raising has been a little slower than we expected,'' he said.
The final amount raised will be handed over to the Red Cross in Faial, the Island worst-hit by the earthquake.
