is recalling 1.5 million bars due to excessive levels of vitamin A.

The recall involves Metabolife diet and energy bars made between December 25, 2000, and May 4, 2001. The department has warned that consumption of the product can cause severe liver damage, bone and cartilage abnormalities, birth defects and increase pressure in the brain.

A spokesman from Consumer Affairs said their investigation could not find any evidence of the bars being sold locally, however they believe private individuals import the bars and sell them to their friends.

The spokesman also said that the Metabolife energy bars should not be confused with the Metabolite energy bars which are sold in several stores here.

The spokesman explained that Metabolite are the original energy bars, while Metabolife were described as the "generic'' or "knock-off'' brand.

Under the Consumer Protection Act 1999, it is an offence to continue the sale of a mandatory recalled product.
