Festival puts art in spotlight

Children will not only be allowed to draw with coloured chalk on the sidewalk, the Corporation of Hamilton is encouraging the activity as part of The Grand Art Festival by the Sea.
The section of Front Street involved will therefore be closed to traffic for the day's activities.
From noon to 6 p.m., Paget Primary art teacher Charmaine Bourne will coordinate the colouring.
"It's a great way to bring art into the lives of Bermuda's children,'' she said.
Other teachers can also join in the fun by calling Mrs. Bourne on 236-5126.
And everyone is invited to the festival which will have on display art created during the last year as well as artwork entered in art competitions.
At 5 p.m. winners of the "Quick Art'', "People's Choice'', and "How I See Bermuda'' competitions will receive some 30 prizes.
There will also be music all day by Lord Necktie (Stan Seymore) and Carl Rodney, Piece of the Rock, Innerscene, Drums of Destiny, the Somerset School of Dance, the Bermuda Conservatory of Music, and the Bermuda Chamber Choir.
For those hungry for more than art, The Surf Club will have an open-air barbecue. The Jamaican Grill, The Beach, Tuscany, and others will also serve food alfresco. And Barritt's and Haagen Daas will have service carts.
Proceeds from the Festival will go to The Masterworks Scholarship Fund for a young Bermudian's attendance at a Fine Arts college programme.
The Festival is sponsored by The Bank of Butterfield in conjunction with The Masterworks Foundation.
