Fitness drive for Bermuda next month
drive.
The first "Keep Bermuda Fit Day'' aims to hammer home the importance of healthy eating and exercise.
It is also designed to help prevent diabetes and associated diseases.
The campaign is being launched by the Bermuda Diabetes Association, King Edward VII Memorial Hospital, Department of Health, and The Fitness Firm.
Companies and organisations are being urged to take part by organising activities through health and fitness committees.
Suggested activities include fun runs and walks -- before or after work.
Businesses are also being encouraged to run information sessions on healthy living.
And they are being urged to invite health professionals, such as a dietitian, doctor or nurse, to give employees tips.
Other ideas include having stress breaks throughout the day, encouraging the drinking of water and eating healthy lunches, and organising games of volleyball, soccer, tennis or squash after work.
In addition, it is suggested such contests as "guess the fat content in certain food'' be held.
A Bermuda Diabetes Association spokesman said: "In the complex and economically uncertain 1990s, local companies and organisations need to have employees who can meet the demands of their work and personal lives.
"Individuals must be able to give it all.'' The spokesman added schoolchildren had been asked to participate by the Department of Education.
