Flatts Village sees the light
Flatts Village will be the site of a series of improvements during upcoming weeks, an activist in the area has reported.
The Ministry of Works and Engineering is inviting tenders for repairs to the public dock in Flatts Village which was damaged by strong currents flowing from Harrington Sound.
These currents have undermined the cave system beneath the dock and the tender is requesting marine contractors who can fill the cave with concrete.
Flatts Village Development Committee chairman W.A. (Toppy) Cowen said the news had delighted his group which had battled for improvements for several years.
He added: "Flower planters and seating will be installed to compliment the safety measures while the existing roadside wall will remain, with a sidewalk installed to protect pedestrians.'' Other proposed work includes repairs and enhancements to the Aquarium Bridge which has not been worked on since 1962, said Mr. Cowen.
Amongst the enhancements will be antique lighting which will continue all the way into Flatts Village.
And the upcoming development of the new Caribbean Exhibit at the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo will include the creation of a sidewalk, said Mr.
Cowen.
This will travel the length of the Aquarium property along the North Shore Road.
And on Sunday, the committee will be turning on the white overhead lights it used for its street festival to celebrate Christmas.
Mr. Cowen said: "During the past several years our committee has overcome what were thought to be insurmountable barriers.
"There were economic questions to address, an understanding of residents likes and dislikes, and, above all, to protect the ecological modes of life within Flatts.
"Perseverance has been the greatest element of our success. We have been knocking on doors for attention for a long time. Some wouldn't open! "But we kept on knocking and what was predicted by some to be a hopeless failure has turned into glorious success.''
