September has been designated the month for sickle cell education, during which programmes and information will be presented to the public by the Sickle Cell Foundation and the Sickle Cell Support Group.
On September 10, a Sickle Cell screening will be held at Cathedral Hall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on the following day there will be a screening from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. by the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
Also on that day a Gospel concert will take place at the New Testament Church of God.
To conclude the month of events, a banquet will be held at the Hamilton Princess hotel which will feature speaker Dr. Ewart Brown from Bermuda Health Care Services.
The Sickle Cell Foundation of Bermuda provides counselling and support to families affected by the disease.
It also provides a liaison with Sickle Cell centres overseas with a view to ensuring that Bermuda is informed of all the latest developments in treatment and management of the disease.
The foundation provides support to Bermudian students with sickle cell anaemia studying abroad.
It recently announced the availability of a scholarship which was established in the memory of the late Arlene Alaire Warner. The scholarship provides funds for two years for a student with sickle cell anaemia to attend Bermuda College.
Those interested in applying for the scholarship can obtain application forms by calling 292-3886.
