Formed by Sandy Butterfield and Jerry Griffiths, FOCUS Counselling Service was created in 1993 to provide a free support resource in the ``back of town'' for

programme is housed within a three-room complex which serves as both a sanctuary and a valuable educational resource. Outside of the discussions held at the facility on recovery and lifestyle issues, clients are also trained -- at many times in one-on-one tutorials -- in the use of computers, typing, English grammar, composing letters, and interview and telephone techniques. An average of 17 people per day use the facility, with approximately 25 attending evening meetings. It is the facility's aim, that each client acquire a high school equivalency or trade school diploma. As a means of client support, there is a 24-hour hot line and courses on acupuncture are also available to help reduce cravings for drugs or alcohol. Another aspect of FOCUS that seems to be appreciated by its clients, is their ability to voice their opinions freely. They are encouraged to talk about anything they like -- race, religion, anything that keeps them focused on a topic other than drugs. The Salvation Army, which provides meals and shelter to many of the Island's homeless, refers many of their clients to FOCUS to help with their re-entry into society. The programme's educational efforts began at the Army Shelter on North Street until premises were found for FOCUS two years later. FOCUS also works closely with Fair Havens, the women's rehabilitation centre which also falls under the auspices of the Council Partners Charitable Trust. One of FOCUS' main thrust is to help clients re-enter the mainstream of society. It counted a total of 587 day visitors for the first six months of the year.
