Friends, colleagues help son of killed Prison Officer

Friends and prison officer colleagues of death crash victim Mr. Derwin Adams are safeguarding his young son's future.

They have raised more than $2,000 through donations and money-spinning ventures.

The cash will go towards four-year-old Derwin Adams Jr.'s education -- and further fund raising is planned.

Mr. Adams, a prison officer at Casemates for six years, became Bermuda's first traffic fatality this year.

He died from head injuries after his bike collided with a car at the Hog Bay Level and Woodlawn junction, Sandys. He was 33.

A goalkeeper for the Prison Officers Club, his brother was Insp. Carlton Adams.

His footballing friends have contributed towards the fund raising.

And his ex-colleagues at Cable and Wireless, where he worked before becoming a prison officer, also chipped in.

Recently, Mr. Adam's widow, Denise, and her son, received three cheques during a special ceremony.

Present were secretary of the Prison Officers' Association divisional officer Mr. Rudy Minors; POA president Mr. Clarence Smith; Cable and Wireless football team representative Mr. Hugh Hollis; Insp. Carlton Adams; and prison officer Calvin DeShields, who organised much of the fund raising.

Also there was another friend and footballing colleague Mr. Alan Tennant Johnson, who presented a cheque on behalf of Colonial Insurance.

Said Mrs. Denise Adams: "I'm overwhelmed by all the kindness. I would like to thank everybody.'' GOODWILL GESTURE -- Widow Mrs. Denise Adams and her son, Derwin, receive a cheque from Prison Officers Association president Mr. Clarence Smith. Next to them are Mr. Adams' mother, Gloria, and his brother Insp. Carlton Adams.
