Though two rescue art shows were planned -- one which took place in July and the other scheduled for this month -- the gallery had been unable to keep its head above water.

Last month The Royal Gazette learned that after only a year in business the Bermuda Society of Arts, which operates the Pitts Bay Road gallery, had run into difficulties paying its rent.

Earlier, president of the society Mr. Elmer Midgett said the gallery's art sales had been strong, but were insufficient to meet the $2,500 a month rent.

He added that the society had sold more art from the Harbour Gallery than it had generally sold from the City Hall gallery.

But yesterday Mr. Midgett said: "It looks like we are going to close the gallery. The art shows did help but it has not been enough. Now we will put our attention towards the City Hall gallery.''
