G&S sends out SOS!
mega-production of `Les Miserables' in October, is still seeking the use of a warehouse or similar large area where sets can be built.
"We are making an urgent appeal for anyone who can help us in this regard to contact us right away,'' says Society president Marjorie Stanton. "We need about 1,000 square feet from July to mid-September. It has to be in a fairly central location as volunteers work on the sets after work -- and most people work in Hamilton.'' G&S scored a major coup when it was granted special permission by Cameron Mackintosh International, earlier this year, to stage the hit musical. The projected show will be the first time that amateur performing rights have been allowed in the west.
Mark Dorrell, one of Britain's top musical directors who works regularly for the Royal National Theatre, helped secure permission from Sir Cameron Mackintosh, and will be the musical director of the G&S production. "It would be a real catastrophe if, having been given `the green light' to go ahead, we find ourselves unable to build any stage sets -- so I would be very grateful indeed if someone, somewhere, could help us out. We would expect to pay a reasonable rent, but we are a charity and donate all proceedings to various charities here, so we cannot pay vast amounts. I do hope that someone can come to our rescue!'' Anyone who is able to assist is asked to contact Mrs. Stanton at 295-3218.
