One of Bermuda's oldest residents is celebrating her 102nd birthday today.

Great great-grandmother Mabel Wells, of Lorraine's Rest Home in Warwick Parish, is set to mark the big day with her family and close friends.

Her granddaughter Beulah White said Mabel puts her long life down to good, clean living.

Ms Wells, a grandmother herself, of Rocklands Road, Warwick, said: "Whenever we ask her why she has lived so long she says she has never drank coffee or eaten fatty foods and, I have to say, she does look good for her age.

"She sometimes forgets things, but she always remembers everybody and everything about them.'' But time is beginning to tell on the elderly lady. For the last two years, Mabel has had birthday parties thrown in her honour, but this year she said she was too tired for big celebrations.

Ms Wells is the matriarch of two sons, (who she has survived), a daughter, eight grandchildren (including two who died), 15 great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.
