Health service gets new office
main office on the Lane in Paget, also are housed in Broadway House on Spurling Hill.
The Spurling Hill facility, Centre for Cognitive Therapy and Behavioural Medicine, will focus on two psychology specialities.
Psychologist Carol Shuman is heading the new office and explained that she will concentrate on cognitive therapy and the relatively new area of behavioural medicine.
"Cognitive therapy is a brief therapy technique that is designed to approach problem solving in an efficient and productive manner,'' Dr. Shuman said.
"Research suggests that long-term psychological therapy, which was the norm until recent times may be unnecessary, inefficient and expensive,'' she added and pointed out that only a quarter of individuals require long-term therapy.
"Studies in north America, where managed care has forced efficiency, have suggested that at least 50 percent of those who will improve, will do so within 12 psychological sessions,'' Dr. Shuman noted.
"Seventy-five percent will do so within 20 sessions.'' Behavioural medicine, according to Dr. Shuman, "deals with health problems such as anxiety or depression related to pain or illness, psychiatric diagnoses such as eating disorders and potentially life threatening behaviours such as smoking or substance abuse''.
