Honours on tap for those who have helped race relations

At a presentation, which will be held on Saturday, January 14, award recipients will fall under three categories -- outstanding services by a group or organisation, outstanding services by an individual, and outstanding services on the international level.

Minister of Human Affairs and Information the Hon. Mr. Jerome Dill and the ministry will be rewarded for their "outstanding work'' in creating the Commission for Unity and Racial Equality (CURE).

Dr. Eva Hodgson will be honoured for her "untiring efforts in the fight against racial injustice in Bermuda and for promoting the need to legislate against this practice''.

And Mr. Glen Fubler will also be recognised for "his many years of raising the cry against Apartheid in South Africa and his continuous support of like-minded organisations such as Amnesty International''.

On hand for the ceremony will be Dr. Wilma Ellis, Chief Administrative officer of the Baha'i International Community United Nations office.

She is also chief administrative officer of the office on Environment, the office for the Advancement of Women, and the Office of Public Information in New York, as well as the Baha'i United Nations office in Geneva, Switzerland.

COURSE AIMED AT SEXUAL AND PHYSICAL VIOLENCE Course aimed at sexual and physical violence A course aimed at giving an insight into abusive behaviour begins this month.

Run on an annual basis by the Women's Resource Centre over the past six years, the ten-week programme is entitled, "Sexual and physical violence -- a Bermuda perspective''.

It aims to give participants the opportunity to listen and talk with speakers who are experts on the subject.

"The course is non profit-making,'' said Centre chairwoman, Miss Toni Daniels. "It is strictly educational. It is about heightening awareness and broadening understanding.'' The course is also a prerequisite for those wishing to become counsellors at the Crisis Centre.

Topics range from domestic violence and sexual harassment to medical procedures following an assault to how to prosecute offenders.

Psychologist of Prisons, Dr. Derrick Binns will give a profile of convicted offenders and outline proposed rehabilitation programmes.

Other speakers include physician Dr. Keith Cunningham who will speak on medical examination of sexual assault victims and supervisor of Child and Family Services Mrs. Glenda Edwards who will address the topic of physical and sexual abuse of children.

Beginning on January 18, the course runs until March 22 with a meeting each week from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Dellwood Primary School Hall. Participants pay a $50 fee to attend.

"People come for a variety of reasons,'' Miss Daniels said. "We would encourage anyone, men and women to participate.'' TEENAGER PLEADS GUILTY CTS Teenager pleads guilty to assaulting Policeman A Police officer suffered scratches to his face and damaged spectacles after an 18-year-old lost control at Hamilton Police Station and hit him in the face.

Cannoth William Roberts of Elliott Street, Pembroke was charged in Magistrates' Court with assaulting a Police officer, violently resisting arrest and wilfully damaging spectacles to an amount of $60 in Magistrates' Court.

He pleaded guilty with an explanation to all three charges.

Police prosecutor, Inspector Peter Duffy, said Roberts went to change a court date at Hamilton Police Station shortly before 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

The conversation escalated into a violent confrontation after Roberts became verbally aggressive. Officers attempted to intervene but Roberts became violent and struggled, Inspector Duffy said.

Roberts was subdued and handcuffed but on reaching the reception area he lashed out at P.c. Lyndon Raynor, striking him in the face.

Officers restrained the defendant before searching and detaining him.

Senior Magistrate the Wor. William Francis ordered a social inquiry report for Roberts who has prior convictions for assault and possession of an offensive weapon.

He was granted bail with a like surety.

THEFT FROM SOCIAL INSURANCE OFFICE CRM Theft from Social Insurance office The Government building was the latest scene of a theft in which $60 worth of coins were stolen from the Social Insurance office.

Police reported that the theft occurred sometime during Tuesday night. And employees were delayed going to work the next morning as Police were still investigating the area.

Detectives are asking members of the public, especially merchants, to look out for anyone trying to dispose of large quantities of small coins.

Police could not reveal how the thief entered the building or how he obtained access into the office.

Anyone who can assist with the inquiry is asked to contact Dc Paul Hitchens at Central CID 295-0011.

This week has already seen five other thefts, which included a 15-year-old youth being arrested for breaking into a Devonshire club.

A Friswell's Hill residence was also broken into and the thief made off with a cellular and cordless telephone and an answering machine, CD player and some jewellry.

Another property in the same area was entered over the New Year. Thieves made off with a large quantity of cassette tapes, crystal glasses, a clock, camera and some clothing.

And a 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of riding a stolen bike on Tuesday afternoon. A van was also reported stolen.

POLICE OFFICER IN `STABLE CONDITION' AC Police officer in `stable condition' The Police officer involved in a single-road traffic accident earlier this week was listed in stable condition yesterday.

The 23-year-old officer, who remains in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit, suffered serious head injuries on Wednesday afternoon after he lost control of his cycle and collided with a wall near St. Paul's Church in Paget.

Anyone who may have information which can assist is asked to contact Police at 295-0011.

KEEP EYE OUT FOR MISSING JUVENILE POL Keep eye out for missing juvenile Family members and Police yesterday appealed to the public for help in finding a missing juvenile.

Fifteen-year-old Jahdiya Trott has been missing since 5 p.m. on Wednesday from her Pembroke home.

She is described as approximately five-feet, four-inches tall, slim build, weighing about 115 pounds, and has medium brown skin.

Jahdiya frequents the Elliot and Court streets area and may be in moral danger, Police said.

They also reminded the public that harbouring a missing juvenile is an offence. Anyone knowing the whereabouts of Jahdiya is asked to contact Police immediately.
