India bound travellers warned

From London, the report states: "Although the situation in much of India is still calm, outbreaks of violence related to the Ayodhya dispute could occur anywhere across the country, particularly in the northern states.

Commonwealth Office notice published yesterday.

From London, the report states: "Although the situation in much of India is still calm, outbreaks of violence related to the Ayodhya dispute could occur anywhere across the country, particularly in the northern states.

"There are reports of disturbances in some areas of Bombay, Calcutta and Hyderabad. Until the situation clarifies, travellers should avoid visiting Uttar Pradesh and Jaipur.

"Visitors should avoid crowds and religious buildings in other states, particularly Rajasthan. The old city area of Delhi should also be avoided.'' The Foreign Office said that the entire Kashmir Valley remains dangerous for foreign visitors and they are strongly advised to avoid the area.

It continued: "In Punjab there are violent daily incidents and indiscriminate attacks. Only essential visits should be made.

"Travel to Assam should be restricted to escorted groups and essential business visits only.''
