kidney transplant due to his injuries.

Terry Pereira -- who ended up in intensive care after falling from a forklift truck -- will next week travel to Brigham's and Women's Hospital in Boston to be assessed as a transplant candidate.

Mr. Pereira suffered broken ribs, pelvis and shoulder in the fall -- and also damaged his kidneys.

He said this week: "The fall just added to it and brought everything on faster.

"I ended up on a dialysis machine -- it was just the luck of the draw.'' Mr. Pereira, of Devonshire, fell last May as he worked in the yard of the Pembroke-based electricity generating firm.

He fell only a few feet -- but as he has only one leg, his injuries were more severe because he fell awkwardly.

Mr. Pereira said: "We will just have to wait and see what happens in Boston.

I'm not really sure exactly what's going on at the moment.

"If I'm found to be a suitable candidate then we'll start looking for a donor.'' Kidneys often come from close relatives, because the chances of a tissue match are much higher.
