Jackson spokesman denies charity probe
A move has been made to pull the plug on electronic media reports that a major fund raising event on the Bermuda calendar is under investigation.
Radio and TV reports last night claimed the Samuel L. Jackson Celebrity Golf Classic was under investigation by the Island's Charity Commissioners.
But Canadian Connection president Tom Godber responded: "It's news to us.
"The event and its organisers are most happy to fully cooperate with Bermuda's Charity Commissioners. All the books have always been available to all and any of the proper authorities.
"However the event and its organisers have not at this time been approached, either formally or informally, by the Charity Commissioners.'' Top accountancy firm Price Waterhouse's report on last year's inaugural Samuel L. Jackson Celebrity Golf Classic showed that some $251,000 was raised.
Of that figure, $243,000 went directly to charities with about $8,000 going toward start up fees for this year's event.
The $243,000 was equally split between the Council Partners Charitable Trust in Bermuda and the Catalog for Giving in New York.
This year's event is set to run from June 3-7 and is well on the way to beating the sum raised last year, said Mr. Godber.
