Juliette goes on view for free
that there will be free entrance to the Gallery for the remainder of December.
This is so that the public can view Masterworks newly-acquired painting, Portrait de Juliette Roche by Albert Gleizes.
For the month of January, entrance will remain free for Masterworks and Bermuda National Gallery members.
The painting will then leave the Island in order to join the Masterworks collection traveling show which is due to open in Toronto on March 15.
The painting was purchased for $170,000 at a Sotheby's auction in New York thanks to generous sponsorship from The Christian Human Foundation, Mr. Andrew Banks, Mrs. Deborah Butterfield, J.P., Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Sharples, and Mr. and Mrs. Oskar Lewonowski.
Glezies and his wife Juliette Roche spent much of 1917 in Bermuda which is when he did completed the painting.
Gleizes was a French cubist painter who, with Metzinger, wrote a number of books on the theories of cubism, including Du Cubism in 1912.
In the summer of 1916, Gleizes lived in Provincetown, Massachusetts along with other cubist artists Marsden Hartley, Charles Demuth and Eugene O'Neill.

Bermuda National Gallery Director Laura Gorham said: "Bermuda National Gallery is pleased to be displaying this important work of art for the Masterworks Foundation.
"Our aim is to promote, benefit and advance the visual arts in Bermuda. We hope everyone will take advantage of this opportunity to come to the Gallery with their families to share a little culture over the holiday season.'' As part of the free admission during December, Gallery visitors will also be able to view the current exhibition, Made in Bermuda, an historic decorative arts show featuring silver, furniture and boat designs.
The Bermuda National Gallery is open from Monday to Saturday's from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
It will be closed today, December 25 and 26.
