Just the ticket! Tereza is rewarded for fund-raising
trek in aid of cancer sufferers. The 28-year-old was presented with two plane tickets to Canada by Patients Assistance League and Service (P.A.L.S.) volunteers Berlene Smith and Jo-Ann Fox.
Miss Martins has taken part in the annual 15-mile walk from Dockyard to Albouy's Point for the last seven years, having realised how P.A.L.S. assists people suffering from cancer.
She said: "I got involved with P.A.L.S. when my mother Zelia was ill with cancer and have taken part in the walk for the past seven years, since my mother passed away.
"Volunteers from P.A.L.S. were there everyday. The nurse was very comforting and helpful to both my mother and the family. "I know how helpful they were to us, so now we try to take part in what we can.'' She was chosen as the prize draw winner after managing to collect all of her $200 sponsorship money by the March 31 deadline set by the charity.
Miss Martins said she was thrilled to have won the tickets, which she plans to use on a holiday to Toronto later this year. "I think I will go away in September for my birthday, but I'm not sure who I'm going to take with me, yet,'' she added. "It will be a great holiday, though.'' Mrs. Smith said she hoped the fund-raising walk in February had raised about $40,000.
"We always need extra money, so this cash will be very well used,'' she said.
"It will pay for the on-going treatment of patients. I think we always manage to raise so much money on our charity walk day because cancer seems to touch everybody in some way. When they hear the name P.A.L.S., they know what we are about.''
