Saturday for their contributions made to the Island.

As part of the Bermuda Kiwanis Club's first National Convention, a banquet was held to salute Mrs. Elizabeth Mroz, Mrs. Alice Burch, Mrs. Ann Smith Gordon, Mrs. Sharon Apopa, and Mrs. Hattie Gilbert as outstanding women of Bermuda.

The women were chosen from several names submitted for their various contributions made to different aspects of Bermuda life, and they were each presented with a plaque.

Mrs. Mroz is the assistant registrar of the Supreme Court and has been with the judicial department for over 30 years.

During these years she has served the department with great distinction through her conscientiousness, initiative, dedication and loyalty.

As assistant registrar she has served countless judges, both in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal, and has seen the Supreme Court grow from one to four judges.

She also assisted in setting up the support staff for the Bermuda Court of Appeal, established in 1965.

Mrs. Mroz is virtually a household name in legal circles. Over the years she has had personal contact with all lawyers, jurors and other members of the public doing business through the Supreme Court Registry.

Apart from her professional life, Mrs. Mroz continues to involve herself in the civic life of the community.

She is treasurer of Project 100 and is an officer of the Eastern Star and president of the US Civilian Woman's Social Club, which encourages the fellowship between the citizens of the United States and Bermuda.

Mrs. Alice Burch is a past president of the Sandys Secondary School Parent Teachers Association and has been a youth and guide leader, a member of the Sea Cadet Parents and Friends Committee, and a Sunday school teacher.

She also was a founder of the United Youth Club, co-founder and president of the Shady Rest Sunshine Club, vice president of the Golden Hour Club, a member of the Young Heart Club, and she is a Red Cross Driver. This year she is also being featured as one of the descendants of the original suffragists.

Mrs. Ann Smith Gordon is a registered nurse trained in the United States. She is the owner and operator of Contours of Bermuda which is not only a lingerie boutique but also supplies and fits most of the surgical supports in Bermuda.

She is serving her 11th year as chairman of the Patients Assistance League and Service, a volunteer organisation responsible for providing care and support to cancer patients in their homes.

Mrs. Gordon is the founding member of the Masterworks Foundation and she is a member of the Bermuda National Trust, the Bermuda Historical Society, the Bermuda Maritime Museum, and the Bermuda Biological Station.

She is also a member of the LCCA and has completed three terms as a council member of the Bermuda Girl Guides.

Due to her interest in Bermuda history Mrs. Gordon was able to produce the first ever audio visual slide show on the history of Bermuda.

As a four part project undertaken by the Junior Service League the show was presented to the Department of Education and made part of the school curriculum.

Among several other awards, Mrs. Gordon was awarded the Queen's Certificate and Badge of Honour in the 1986 Queen's Birthday honours for community service.

Mrs. Sharon Apopa is the social worker and guidance counsellor at Sandys Secondary School.

Previously she worked at Family Services where she dealt with child abuse, neglect, adoptions and foster care.

As director of counselling services, Mrs. Apopa has been instrumental in the effective functioning of the Rape Crisis Centre. She has also conducted several workshops for teens.

In her 82 years of life Mrs. Hattie Gilbert has been instrumental in helping to raise thousands of dollars for charity and other organisations.

She has been a part of many organisations, including the household of Ruth, the Somerset branch of the Sunshine League which she served as president for 12 years and the Somerset branch of the boy scouts of which she was also president.

Mrs. Gilbert also served on the board of the Pringle Rest Home, the Packwood Home and the Sandys Flower Show Committee.

She was also the founding member of the West End Parent Teachers Association and has taken part in several other clubs.
