La Delicia always looks delicious

La Delicia is the home of Mayor Lois Perinchief and sits on the end of a popular residential street, 25 Queen Street.

It is a short walk from the heart of the Town of St. George. It is a charming and vibrant Victorian cottage with its pink exterior, dark green shutters and white gingerbread cornices which surround a gracious verandah.

The verandah has its original wood work of pitch pine known to be extremely strong. The white balustrades give it a gracious touch. All of the wood is very well preserved. It is evident that this fine home has always had immaculate care.

The owner guesses that the home was built sometime in the mid to late 1800s.

Her parents took possession of the home in the early 1900s and Miss Perinchief has lived there since her birth in 1926 as did her brother who was her senior sibling by eight years.

Since we are neighbours, I pass her home frequently often by foot or bicycle, and many times I have observed tourists walking along her road. They stop and point adoringly at this captivating cottage adorned by its beautiful flower gardens. It is such a pretty landmark and I have seen tourists stop to take pictures.

"I have always loved living here and the main house is one level with very high ceilings and this makes the home cool in the summer,'' Miss Perinchief said.

There are nine rooms in the house and the owner's favourite rooms are her kitchen and bedroom. The original fireplace remains in fine structure in the living room. The interior doorways have sculptured mouldings popular in the Victorian era and the home is well appointed with antiques.

"All of the gardens are original except one circular one in the front. I have always loved flowers and watching things grow,'' Miss Perinchief concluded with a smile.

La Delicia: charming Victorian cottage with many small flower gardens, practically a landmark in St. George's.
