Lecture on Spanish painters
lecture for the Bermuda Society of Arts on Friday.
Dr. Priscilla Muller, curator of the Hispanic Society of America in New York, and a well-known lecturer, will be giving a slide show and lecture on the works of Sorolla, Sargent and Velazquez.
Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923), acknowledged as Spain's outstanding "painter of light'', trained at Valencia's Royal Academy of Fine Arts, after which he won a scholarship to study in Rome and he also visited Paris.
His paintings, which soon brought him renown far beyond Spain, are marked by brilliant, high-key colours, representing a kind of conservative version of Impressionism.
His 14 mural panels, commissioned by the Hispanic Society of America, may be seen by appointment in New York City. There is a museum devoted to his work in Madrid.
Dr. Muller will also talk about the work of the famous American portraitist, John Singer Sargent, who was a contemporary and friend of Sorolla, and Spain's greatest painter of all, Velazquez. Her talk is being sponsored by Bacardi International.
While in Bermuda, Dr. Muller will also spearhead the jurying for the Society's Winter Show which opens to the public on Saturday, October 30, at the Society of Arts Gallery at City Hall.
Mrs. Maria Smith, President of the Society of Arts, says that due to the African Exhibition in the National Gallery, the Sorolla lecture will take place this Friday 7 p.m. in the Cathedral Hall, Church Street, Hamilton. Wine, cheese and soft drinks will be served. Admission is $15 ($10 for members).
