Less traditional show
different.
The first production of the newly-formed Waterspout Theatre group is a stab at something less traditional.
"It's a Greek tragedy with a bit of a modern, futuristic bend,'' said co-founder of Waterspout Theatre, Allen Smith.
The masterminds behind Waterspout decided that they would do a project together after discovering that they had similar views about the theatre world.
Waterspout is actually the merging of two groups, Andra Simons from Theatre inni and Allen Smith from Camillion Productions. "We both had concerns about the division in theatre and the arts in general, so we decided to do a show,'' Mr. Smith said.
"The Man'', which is being performed at Rock Island Coffee, was written by Sandra Allan and directed by Ms Simons, the winner of Bermuda Gold's Thespian of the Year award.
Lisabet Outerbridge, owner of Rock Island Coffee and an actor in the show, said it was exciting to be a part of something not mainstream.
"It's exciting to see two Bermudians going out on a limb to bring Bermudians something different,'' she said.
"There is talent here. People need to know they have an outlet for it.'' Although Rock Island Coffee will only be able to seat 25 to 30 people per show, it is hoped that audiences will not be disappointed.
"There's a need for smaller (more intimate) theatre spaces in Bermuda. This show may be small, but it has a great energy,'' Mr. Smith said.
"Also we wanted to provide the public with affordable theatre of substance at an affordable price. We're privileged to have the venue to do that in.'' "The Man'' started last night and will continue until Saturday at Rock Island Coffee. Performances begin at 8 p.m. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at Rock Island Coffee.
