Letter from KBB president, Scott Kitson 1998 - 1999 was a year of great organisational growth for our charity, Keep Bermuda Beautiful, (KBB). We have
without overextending our resources. I am proud to say that we were successful both in establishing and in achieving that goal. KBB was more active than in past years and our plan to be more focused on our RockWatchers programmes and to rejuvenate our coordinated cleanup efforts were the keys to our success. Of particular note were the new spring Heritage Monthcleanup which was added to our already successful Marine & Coastal event; and the first annual KBB BBQ. I am confident that KBB is well positioned to take advantage of its rejuvenated organisational strength in 1999; our future is looking bright, clean too! In a continuing effort to become more accessible to the public, we have further developed the KBB web page. Highlights of the 1998 - 1999 year and details of our upcoming events can be found at the web address www.kbb.bm. I would encourage you to explore the page, as we will seek to exploit the efficiencies of electronic communications in an effort to reduce our administrative overheads. I am encouraged by the progress that KBB has made to date, especially with respect to the new Corporate and Community RockWatcher programs; the financial support of Bermuda's residential and corporate communities has been very enthusiastic. We were very aggressive in budgeting for our 1998-1999 calendar of events and I am happy to report that we were able to meet or beat all of our budgeted expenses. Looking forward, we have budgeted for new growth in KBB sponsored programmes and towards this end our fund raising efforts will need to be redoubled in order to protect the charity's bottom line and to sustain further growth. Turning our attention to the next major KBB calendar event, we have been hard at work to ensure that the 1999 BBQ Extravaganza and the Coastal & Marine Cleanup will be as well received as our 1998 events. Of particular interest is the new sign-up page for our annual Coastal & Marine cleanup, which can be found on our web page.
This has been termed ground breakingby the Centre for Marine Conservation and they are looking to implement the format on their own web page for their US based nationwide cleanup. In closing, I would like to thank KBB's Executive Committee and supporting members and corporate sponsors for their efforts in keeping the spirit of KBB alive. I encourage everyone to join us in protecting our island from the unsightliness of litter and to take advantage of the curbside recycling programme already in place. If we would all commit to not littering and to picking up one single piece of trash per a day, together we can help our island to live up to the pristine reputation that it is famous for. Let us all work together to keep Bermuda beautiful. Scott Kitson
