A huge wooden and iron wreck in water off the snorkel park was found by the Maritime Museum, but officials were baffled as to what it could be.

John Young, director of conservation and underwater archaeology, said divers from the Royal Irish Regiment had looked at the site, but still couldn't decide what it was.

But now a member of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute has shed light on the discovery. Michael Collier, deputy chairman of the BUEI, said the wreck was one of three battle target barges used by the Royal Navy after the Second World War.

No more than hulks, the barges had sails and were towed into position by vessels the St. Ab's and St. Blazy to be fired upon by Royal Naval vessels. He said two more were to be found at Timlins Narrows and Spectacle Island, where they sank after falling into disuse.
