Local trio to perform on BET Carol Parker News Editor
Three teenage dancers will fly to Washington DC today in hopes of promoting themselves and the Island.
Bermuda College students Zalika Millet, Shanyea Trott, and Berkeley Institute student Kia Georges will appear on Black Entertainment Television's popular Teen Summit this weekend.
And the show, which is aired across the US and on cable channel 28 in Bermuda, is expected to be seen by millions.
Choreographer and dance teacher Miss Suzette Harvey said the dancers received the opportunity after entering a Teen Services talent competition in February.
Competing among 15 youngsters in the areas of voice, drama, and dance, the youngsters, 18-year-old Zalika, 17-year-old Shanyea, and 16-year-old Kia came out on top.
As a reward the trio calling themselves "Shazaki'' -- a combination of their first names -- will have the opportunity to showcase their talents on Teen Summit.
The show will be aired on Saturday at 1 p.m. local time.
And yesterday, Miss Harvey said she was proud of the teenagers who have been with her dance company -- Bermuda United Productions -- for some five years.
"They never really competed before,'' she said, referring to the Teen Services competition. "They entered this year before they became too old to qualify.'' Although she encouraged them to enter the competition, Miss Harvey said the students created and practised their entire dance routine alone. "It was obvious that they put a lot of time into it,'' she said. "They started off with a Bob Marley routine, then they moved on to modern dance, then hip-hop.
"They wanted to cater to kids their age and at the same time put a positive message across with the Bob Marley music.'' Miss Harvey said the teenagers -- who are well-versed in all forms of dance including ballet, modern dance and tap -- will perform an African hip-hop piece that incorporates some gombey steps on Teen Summit.
They will also be wearing gombey costumes.
"This is not just a regular television programme,'' she added. "This is a special showcase. Kids from all over will be performing.''
