Lorna: major changes at BHS
Mathematics and Language tutor for secondary students. And as one of the longest-serving staff members, she has witnessed tremendous change and growth within the school. "BHS has changed phenomenally since I've been here,'' she said. "It has grown not only in numbers but in its capacity -- we're always trying to find better ways to do things.'' In 1970, Mrs. Andersen moved to Year one, formerly known as kindergarten, where she taught five- and six year-olds for more than a decade. "I enjoyed teaching kindergarten,'' said Mrs. Andersen. "But I was definitely ready to move on. And at that time, I was asked to be the head of lower primary. "Two years ago, I became head of primary,'' she added. "We no longer have a lower primary -- the whole primary school is now considered one department.'' Mrs. Andersen still teaches but only one lesson a week to each Year one class. "It helps me get to know the students,'' she noted. "I also work on school productions with the girls and participate in assemblies. "But 90 percent of my job is in administration,'' she said, adding that the primary department now has 326 students. Mrs.
Andersen is also deputy headmistress of the Bermuda High School, a position which among other things, requires her to attend management meetings and take over when headmaster, Mr. Jack Wright is away. "As deputy head, I'm basically involved with anything that involves the entire school,'' she said, adding that she liaises closely with the headmaster. Having spent more than 25 years with the school, Mrs. Andersen has worked with numerous department heads and teachers -- personalities, she says, that have contributed to the school's growth and change. "After all these years, I still find my job exciting. It hasn't been a static experience because the school is always changing. BHS is an exciting school to be in,'' she said. "I've been very happy at this school and am pleased with the way BHS has changed over the years.'' She added that the education is excellent but like in any school, it can be improved. "The plus, however, is that BHS is aware of this and we're constantly striving to better our education.''
