touching the hearts of everyone who reads her poetry and essays.

Although she would rather be known as a `Jamudian', (part Jamaican part Bermudian) Mrs. Dunn-Smith believes that everyone, no matter what colour, can find a certain kindness in her work.

Editor of her books Mr. James Malone described her latest work as "power, wisdom, and inspiration that can never be erased once you read the words.

"They are for all occasions. These words leave you spellbound and filled with knowledge you will be proud and eager to share with others.'' Mrs. Dunn-Smith was born in Jamaica but spent most of her teenage life in Bermuda. She returns to the Island to promote her second book of poetry The Nations In Waiting.

This book of poetry and essays has been said to take the readers through many emotions ranging from smiling, tears to joyful laughter. Her works range from social issues to love and romance.

"Through my writing, I have learned to recognise that people are people and no one problem is unique,'' Mrs. Dunn-Smith said.

"A lot of writers want the sensationalism that comes with being a writer. I strive to bring consciousness to the unconscious mind.'' She added: "Writers control the world. We have a very important part to play.

We can either save or destroy the world because we have the power to hypnotise.

"We can control people's minds because they believe in the pen and paper.'' She added: "I feel good when I read my work, I feel as if I'm making a difference.'' Mrs. Dunn-Smith began writing several years ago through a writers' workshop run by Mrs. Marah Haas of the Bermuda Writers Club.

But the origin of her writing came from a vision she had that she believes gave her the gift to write.

She has written two books which are selling in the United Kingdom, United States, Europe and the Caribbean.

And because of their popularity she has been guest speaker at several colleges in the US and at a writers conference in the UK. Tapes of her poetry have also been played on the British Broadcasting Corporation radio show.

Mrs. Dunn-Smith hopes her work encourages young Bermudians to achieve. "Let nothing rise above or below your goals,'' she said.

"Young people are confused about what direction they should take. I believe that I am a part of the solution by talking to young Bermudians and encouraging them. I tell them that there is nothing they can't do, they can accomplish what they want to.'' She added: "The other thing that can counteract the rebelliousness that we today demonstrate against each other is love. Nothing else can stop it but love, this is what I try to bring out in my work.'' Mrs. Dunn-Smith will be reading her poetry and signing books in the Adams Lounge at Hamilton Princess tomorrow from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
