But yesterday Mr. Mello Della, manager of the Victoria Street restaurant, threw up his hands and told the moaners -- you cannuda be serious! "It's just a joke,'' he exclaimed.

The sign's colours are green, red, and white -- those of the Italian national flag.

Although it jokingly warns that parked cars of non-Italians will be towed away, Mr. Della was keen to stress this would not happen.

"Of course not. The sign was put up by one of my waiters. It's all just a bit of fun.''
