Museum chief judges preservation awards

Caribbean-based annual awards programme aimed at selecting the best examples of restored architecture in the region.

The director of the Bermuda Maritime Museum joined nine judges in Miami earlier this month to consider submissions to the 1992 American Express Preservation Awards Programme for the Caribbean.

The focus of the judging was "excellence in the protection and enhancement of the Caribbean's cultural and architectural heritage''.

The programme stresses the idea that "historic buildings are of value for tourism and for the pride of the country,'' said Dr. Harris.

The Maritime Museum last year won an award for the preservation of the Commissioner's House in Dockyard.

Dr. Harris was chosen as a judge this year to represent the 1991 winners. This year's winners will be announced at the Caribbean Tourism Organisation's annual conference next month in the Bahamas.
