Musson: Cablevison improvements coming
Despite the loss of a few channels and criticism of some of the programming, the new head of Bermuda Cablevision is confident of the product being broadcast.
General manager Carl Musson said that putting together a line-up that is entertaining and informative to all was a major challenge, but not an unattainable one.
He was speaking on the heels of letters to the Editor lamenting the presence of Spanish language programming and advertising on some channels.
And just last week, Much TV (MTV channel 40) from Canada disappeared from the cable line-up, and fans of pop, rock, and hip-hop music lost what had been a mainstay on their screens for most of a decade.
Mr. Musson said: "There's very little we can do about the Spanish language programming. It's related to what is available to Bermuda.
"We have to get some of these things through a Caribbean cooperative. That's the only way,'' he added. "But in the case of Nickelodeon, that's a small price to pay.
"We still have some flexibility in what we provide and while we are always looking to enhance our programming, it continues to be a challenge.'' Mr. Musson explained that cable providers such as Cablevision were subject to contractual agreements and in the case of Much TV, the network recently withdrew its feed to all non-Canadian affiliates.
But he promised: "We're trying to find a replacement music channel.'' Of his new job, Mr. Musson -- who left his post of executive officer of the Bermuda Land Development Company in April -- said: "Whatever I do, I always am fully committed to it and giving it my all.
He concluded: "There is a learning curve with all the complexities of programme supply and the issues related to that. But I'm happy with the new challenge.
"One of the exciting things are the technical advances which will clearly have an impact on this industry for the benefit of Cablevision and the public.'' `We're trying:' Bermuda Cablevision chief Carl Musson.
