Enter married mother of two Jennifer Smith, a financial analyst with the Bank of Bermuda in her mid thirties. In an effort to fulfil a lifetime career goal to be come a registered Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Mrs. Smith quit her job and enrolled as a full time day student at the Bermuda College.
"Initially it was very intimidating, I felt inadequate as I was with kids fresh out of high school who were quick on the draw and accustomed to the pace and the whole school setting.'' Mrs. Smith admitted.
"But I rose above that uncomfortable feeling and was proud of myself. I discovered that as a mature student I was actually more disciplined,'' she crooned, "after a while, many of the youth just stopped coming to classes.'' As a full time student at the college, Mrs. Smith said she had to spend a lot of time studying and she admitted this had an impact on her family. "It was bit tough on my daughter who was eleven at the time.'' Mrs. Smith recalled.
"I had to be in the library studying a lot, but after a short time it actually served as a positive influence on my daughter, she became more studious. It got so that as I did my studying, she did her homework.'' Commending the college for the support offered to her as a mature student Mrs.
smith said, "I think the college is recognising that a lot of adults want to further their education and they did try to encourage us to form a support group.'' The group was to give the mature students an opportunity to meet and know each other as well as a place for them to talk out concerns and problems.
Now finished her two year full time stint at the Bermuda College, Mrs. Smith will be back in the Continuing Education Department as a night student for a few more classes before she can sit the CMA exam.
She has realised better job prospects on completing the two years, she said and has assumed a position as assistant controller of Meyer Industries. Asked her plans once she's completed her CMA, Mrs. Smith had an air of total confidence, "I must say one good thing about my move to Meyer Industries is that there is room for growth there.''
