New owners for Beergarden
acquisition of the German restaurant with Octoberfest celebrations.
Beergarden RSM Ltd., owned by Mr. Stanley Mocklow and his wife Mrs. Angela Mocklow, officially took ownership of the restaurant from the Flying Chef Ltd.
on October 1 and plan to commemorate Octoberfest with "special German meals'', said Mr. Mocklow.
Though he would not divulge the purchase price, Mr. Mocklow did say it was a "good price''. He alluded others had offered higher bids but he believed the former owners went with his bid because they believed he would keep the business running in a very similar format. Service was not interrupted during the ownership change.
No drastic changes are planned for the Washington Lane restaurant but two new Bermudian staff members were added, bringing the business' total employee number to 14, he said.
Mr. Mocklow, 57, was the purchasing manager for King Edward VII Memorial Hospital from 1970 to 1982 while his wife is a therapist at St. Brendan's Hospital. After leaving the hospital, Mr. Mocklow, a Bermudian, operated an importing company.
Meanwhile, Mr. Geza Wolf, former manager of the Beergarden and a co-owner of the Flying Chef Ltd., said in September he could no longer run the Beergarden and the Flying Chef catering business.
"It is too much work for one person, I'd rather run one business (the Flying Chef) well,'' he commented then.
In the last ten years, two or three people, one of whom was Mr. Wolf, shared restaurant management duties. But Mr. Wolf had been the lone manager since January after one partner left the Island and another took over another restaurant.
The second of two five-year leases between Mr. Wolf and the property owner ran out last year but Mr. Mocklow noted he was able to secure a new lease agreement with Knick Knack Company Ltd. which owns the restaurant's location.
