Dr. Harris, well known internationally as an archaeologist, said he regarded it a great honour to be selected by the Oxford University Press.

The book will be part of a series including the Oxford Companion to Music and the Oxford Companion to Literature.

Dr. Harris will be writing an essay on archaeological stratigraphy, in which he is acknowledged to be an expert through his invention "The Harris Matrix.'' Stratigraphy, he explained, is the process of dating various archaeological discoveries by using the earth's rock layers or looking at how various roads and buildings have been built on top of each other.

His textbook "Principles of Archaeological Stratigraphy'' has two editions and has been reprinted twice. It has also been published in Italian, Slovene, Polish and Spanish.

A letter from the Oxford University Press, in New York, said that the editors had put a great deal of thought into selecting contributors.

Dr. Harris noted: "It is a very prestigious book, so this really is a nice honour to be invited to contribute to this venture.'' His recent "Great Guns of Bermuda,'' a guide to the Island's principal forts was reprinted last year.

Dr. Edward Harris.
