Park concerts are the tonic for summer

programme in the series of open-air entertainments that have succeeded far beyond the dreams of its instigators.

The Sunday Concerts in the Park, which began with just one traditional band concert in 1992, have now swelled to a regular programme of six summer events and a special Christmas concert each year.

Sponsored jointly by the Corporation of Hamilton and the Bank of N.T.

Butterfield, the Victoria Park musical get-togethers attract audiences of between two and three thousand, with even more expected for the Rock 'n' Roll concert, featuring top local groups, which takes place on July 30.

Says Mr. Roger Sherratt, Secretary of the Corporation: "When we first started, people would just come along to listen to the concert. Now it's turned into a big community -- and family -- event, with many more children and lots of people bringing big hampers for picnic suppers!'' Mr. Sherratt has also announced that the `Youth to Youth', slated for May but postponed due to bad weather, has now been re-scheduled for Sunday, October 22.

With the `Big Band Sound' planned for August 20, he reveals that an internationally famous band will almost certainly be taking part in this event: "We are finalising details now, so I can't disclose the name at the moment, but it's quite amazing that they have offered to come down here, free of charge, specifically to perform at our concert.'' September brings `All That Jazz and Som Socca', with some of Bermuda's leading bands and vocalists echoing the recent upsurge of interest in music with the jazz beat. Finally, there will be the popular Christmas Concert on December 17.

Mr. Sherratt pays tribute to the Bank of Butterfield, whose sponsorship has enabled the Corporation to stage the concerts free of charge. "I'd like to emphasise that this is very much a team effort. Ms Sharon Turner at the Bank and Mr. Jonathan (Stalk) Trott of Spanish Town International both do a tremendous amount behind the scenes to assure the success of the concerts. Mr.

Trott provides the sound system but also spends a lot of time previewing would-be performers, especially if they're new on the music scene. We're very grateful for all the help we receive in making these concerts such a tremendous success.'' He says that he is particularly pleased that this free, family entertainment takes place in a very safe setting. "Everyone is very well-behaved, there are no police officers on duty, and we have no trouble at all in attracting the best of talent. We also like to think that we are helping local musicians to showcase their talent.'' GUITAR LICKS -- Randy Lambert does a `Jimi Hendrix' impression during a past Concert in the Park.
