Parsons Road shelter adds a little Christmas comfort

Residents at the Salvation Army's Emergency Housing Complex feasted on a Christmas turkey and enjoyed access to a comfortable day room over the holiday.

Their meal, served by volunteers and Salvation Army officers, was accompanied by music, carolling, games, and pool tables.

Supervisor of booths one and two at the Parson's Road shelter, Robert Simmons, was on hand throughout the day and night.

He said: "That is unusual for them to attend the day centre on a holiday. In the past clients were allowed to remain in the sleeping quarters on Christmas day.'' Mr. Simmons added: "Most times it is a happy time for them. Even though they're not with their families. We make every effort to fill the void.

"They can leave at their own will, but I'm certain many will return for the festive activities. I am sure it will be a day of rest for both the men and the women. They will have a great time, no doubt about that.'' The night shelter will close at 8 a.m. and reopen at 5 p.m. The day room will however will open from 8.45 a.m. and close at 11.45 a.m. in preparation for the lunchtime meal.

While several men were disappointed with the shelter's general rules, many men said they will visit their families.

On man said: "I'm going to my family for Christmas. I won't be back in time for the 5 p.m. cut off though. I'm going to stay with them I guess.'' Another man, who asked to be called "Pepper'' said: "Unfortunately, yes I will be here for Christmas. But may I say it is through my own device.'' Pepper added: "Being down here for Christmas is very hard. It is not nice to be away from your family. This is a time of giving. People do give food and donations but that doesn't make it any easier.'' He said the shelter does not have a Christmas tree and he was disappointed that after the meal was served at noon there would not be another.

"RF'' said he had the option of going to some family members or to friends homes to spend the day.

"I'm not really down so much about being here,'' he said. "I have to be responsible for my own choices. I never saw myself in this situation.'' RF added: "I have had a few hustles to get gifts to take my son. Christmas is for the children. Let them have their fun or whatever.''
