He later discovered the carver was a Mr. John Christian, a direct descendant of Fletcher Christian, the man who led the 19th century HMS Bounty mutiny against Captain Bligh. The mutineers, fleeing British justice, settled on one of the Pitcairn Islands in the South Pacific. The islands form Britain's most remote colony.
