Raving and rolling about Bermuda
'till broad day light'' this famous song sung by Bill Hailey and the Comets could possibly be the theme song for the Rock Ramblers.
Rock Ramblers was the brainchild of Mr. Tony Fernandes and a group of his friends who have been spearheading all of the Rock Ramblers activities.
Early Ramblers were all members of the Bermuda Aquarium Museum and Zoological Society's Natural History 1997 Fall Course. These early nature junkies enjoyed the field trips hosted by the Aquarium so much that they decided to meet once a month.
A little bit of a twist was added when Mr. Fernandes decided to open the rambles to the public and accept donations which are directed to a different environmental charity every month.
Rock Ramblers' unusual name derives from the fact that walkers don't just walk. They pick up trash along the way, look at the various types of trees and sometimes even watch for different types of birds.
"We were somewhat younger and certainly more ambitious back then'' Mr.
Fernandes recalled of the early days.
Not a walk along a straight and narrow path, their two-to-5 mile hikes usually takes the Ramblers along the Railway Trail or along the beach.
They were recently joined by Robert Chandler who is a "natural historian and Bermudian savant'' and Brian Graves who, according Mr. Fernandes, is a military historian who enriches the hikers knowledge of the Island's "coastal fortifications'', in other words -- Bermuda's reefs.
Also a "very instrumental'' rambler by the name of Vernee Simmons spends up to three weeks finding information to share with her fellow ramblers.
According to fellow rambler Brian Connell, Ms Simmons is "very passionate'' about rambles and can often be counted on to share her knowledge of the history of Bermuda.
She has researched such things as the growth of Bermuda's endemic cedar tree, the Island's natural evolution, churches in Bermuda, education, and of Bermuda's famous marine life.
Brian Connell, along with Ms Simmons is one of the first ramblers. He claims that since beginning a year and half ago the Ramblers have walked almost the entire Island.
And age is just a number to this young-hearted group -- the youngest member is just fifteen months old.

Rock on: The Rock Ramblers Association met for a walk at the Arboretum recently. These monthly walks accept donations and turn them over to a different charity.
