Read-A-Thon will help to raise funds for playground equipment
Saltus Junior School students yesterday began burying their heads in books in order to have fun later.
The students are participating in a "Read-A-Thon'' to raise money for the upgrading of playground equipment.
The "Read-A-Thon'' programme, which will continue for three weeks, was organised by teacher Mrs. Kay Latter.
Sponsors can give a penny or more for each page read by the students. While parents will monitor the reading and sign the daily reading log which will then be returned to teachers.
"Last year, our students read thousands of pages and raised over $4,500 for relief efforts in Rwanda,'' teacher Mrs. Christine DeSilva said.
"In an age when adults are concerned about the quality of education, we believe that the Read-A-Thon is exactly what is required to enhance teaching of educational basics. Reading is essential and this particular event seems to inspire the children to enjoy reading as a pastime.'' Mrs. DeSilva also praised Phoenix Stores and the Bookmart for providing incentive prizes.
The Bookmart will throw a party for the class that reads the most pages and will present eight gift certificates for the top readers.
"We are delighted that the Bookmart is supporting the programme and we know that the party and gift certificates will spur greater interest among the girls and boys,'' Mrs. DeSilva said.
The school's plans for upgrading its playground equipment includes "new, imaginative play areas which blend with the natural environment surrounding the school''.
