Real life short story, ``My Hurricane Emily horror story''
On September 25, 1987, as I stood on my porch looking out of my sliding glass doors and watching the goings and comings of Hurricane Emily, I saw trees being ripped up, and branches flying everywhere in all directions.
I could see my neighbour's plant hot house, pieces flying overhead and dropping all over. My pool was filled with debris and plastic chairs. My yard was filled with branches of every description. It certainly was a sight to see and something I will never forget! While all of this was going on, little did I know, that at the same time, Hurricane Emily decided to use my 35 foot Trojan house boat as a kite.
It was moored at the back of Ports Island, and it was seen by someone who was rescuing another boat at that time, to be yanked out of the water and flown on its chain, then dropped upside down on the rocks on the north side of the island.
It was a sad sight to see my lovely houseboat all smashed up, with all of the cushions, children's clothing and toys floating around the bay. The interior was all broken up and the windows smashed. It was a sight to remember, for sure.
My nephew, who works on Marshall's Island, told me about it, and also took me up there to see it. This was not one of my happier days, as my family really enjoyed staying on our houseboat.
We pulled it up and transferred it to land where it remained for almost two years getting repaired. Time has passed and our boat, which is called " The Crest of Devonshire '', sits in the Dockyard Marina, and we still enjoy it.
